150 trees planted by Weston St Mary students, LNER and Carbon Trust boosting local environment

21/01/19

Last year we joined pupils of Weston St Mary CofE Primary School and Carbon Footprint to get green fingered and plant 150 trees within the school grounds.

The project aims to raise awareness with the pupils regarding environmental issues while also providing a new habitat for wildlife. A combination of Birch (Silver), Common Alder, Dog/ Guelder Rose and Green Beech species have been chosen to support the local school biodiversity.

The tree planting is the first of many we are looking to organise, together with Carbon Footprint, to plant a total of 2,800 native broadleaf trees along the East Coast mainline by March 2019. We are currently sourcing locations for the remaining 2,650.

The project forms part of our Customer and Community Improvement Fund, which was established to help customers and communities to undertake projects and initiatives that will help address a local issue, bring to life unused or forgotten spaces and deliver educational or environmental benefits.

Rachael Wilson, LNER’s Station Partnership Project Manager said:

“We are very excited about our tree planting programme and are thrilled to have kicked it off here in Spalding with the help of Weston St Mary Primary School. Sustainability and protecting the environment are core values for us and we’re focused on having a positive impact in the regions we serve.”

John Buckley, Managing Director at Carbon Footprint said:

“LNER are taking a very responsible step in supporting native tree planting in the UK - and what better way to do this than in local schools, engaging kids as the environmental ambassadors of the future.”
