Are you train ready?

Being train ready makes a big difference to everyone’s journey and helps us keep your train running on time. Smarter departers know what to expect and what to do at the station and onboard the train to help us avoid delays.

When getting on the train, don’t slow the flow and be mindful of those boarding behind you and keep moving down the aisle to allow other customers to also get on.

Read more handy tips below so you’re prepared for the smoothest possible journey.

  • The right zone for the best start

Platform zones at most of our stations tell you where to wait for your coach on the platform, so that you’re in exactly the right spot to board the train and keep it running on time. To find your zone, see the Customer Information Screens, sign up for LNER Assistant alerts or ask a member of the station team.

  • Stow it quick, keep it clear

Get ready to stow your bags quicky and in the right place, so that there’s space for everyone. Most luggage can be stored overhead or under your seat, meaning you can take your seat promptly and allow other customers to get to theirs.

  • Fold buggies to stay on track

Doorways, aisles and unfolded buggies don’t mix well. Please collapse prams and buggies before you board to keep things moving. Need a hand? Just ask a member of staff.

  • Book your bike and ride on time

Boarding with a bike can cause delays if you’re unprepared. You’ll need to reserve a space and check your bike fits our maximum dimensions. Bikes also take longer to board and you need to be in the right part of the platform, so please arrive early and make yourself known.

  • Arriving at the station

We recommend arriving in plenty of time to find your platform. At most stations, we use platform zones to tell you where the coach is going to stop, so you’re in the correct place. Use the information screens or sign up for LNER Assistant alerts to find which zone you need to wait at. Orange squares on the floor and blue circles on pillars tell you where each zone is. During your journey

Our tips will make boarding the train and your journey as smooth as can be.

Be prepared to get on your train and know what to expect once you're onboard.

  • Help us keep the train on time

Some trains may be on the platform for as little as 90 seconds. It’s important that you’re ready to board and we need your help to keep the train running on time. That means finding your boarding zone so you’re in the right place on the platform, using all the doors and storing your luggage correctly. Allow other customers to get off first and if you’re travelling with larger items, consider boarding last.

When it’s time to leave us, we’ll let you know the next station is approaching. Start making your way towards the doors and if you’re travelling with luggage, allow extra time.

  • Travelling with children

Kids love trains and you'll love travelling with them too with these tips for making your journey as smooth as possible, as well as some money-saving tips.

If you’re travelling with a pushchair or buggy, please collapse this before you board. These should be stored in one of the luggage racks or storage cupboards and should never block the aisles or doors

  • Luggage

Our luggage policy is in place to make sure there is enough space for everyone. When you board the train, place small and medium-size bags, including overnight cabin-size suitcases, overhead or under seats. Only large suitcases should go in the racks at the ends of the coaches, as space here is limited, and these must be placed on their sides to make the best use of the space.

There’s also space between some of the seats and large storage cupboards throughout the train. On our 9 car Azuma trains, these can be found in Coaches B and L.
