Christmas and New Years travel advice 2020

Train travel is a little different this year, so follow our Christmas travel advice to make getting home for Christmas as easy and laidback as watching TV on Boxing Day.

Our trains are extremely busy over Christmas and because of the necessary changes to keep you safe, this is going to be especially true this year.

So whether you're going home for Christmas or planning a Christmas getaway, take the time to read our travel tips, especially if you haven't travelled with us for a while.

Christmas travel tips

It's really important that everyone follows the advice from us, to keep themselves, other passengers and our staff safe.

Remember to plan ahead and book tickets early and give yourself plenty of time when you arrive at the station to get to your platform, especially if you're bringing luggage.

Planned engineering

As part of the ongoing East Coast Upgrade work, there is some planned engineering that will reduce available services running to London Kings Cross.

Thursday 24 December (Christmas Eve) – Avoid Travel to or from London

Services will be very busy with reduced capacity into and out of London King’s Cross Station.

Friday 25 and Saturday 26 December (Christmas Day and Boxing Day) – No trains run on these days

LNER will operate no trains or alternative services on either of these dates.

Sunday 27 through to Wednesday 30 December – Do Not Travel to or from London

Four day period of significant disruption with no services to or from London King’s Cross Station.

  • If you’re making an essential journey during this time, you will need to transfer at Peterborough or Stevenage for alternative services to or from London

Thursday 31 December through to Sunday 3 January 2021 – Avoid Travel to or from London

Services will be very busy with reduced capacity into and out of London King’s Cross Station.
