Student Travel Tips
If you are travelling to and from university, here are some top travel tips for a cheaper, more comfortable journey.
Keep luggage light

Only bring what you can carry as there is limited space onboard. And remember to give yourself plenty of time when you arrive at the station to get to the platform with your luggage.
Reserve a seat

When you book an LNER Advance ticket you’ll have a seat reservation as standard. But if you’ve chosen a Flexible ticket, like Off-Peak, you will want to check if you have a seat reservation for both parts of your journey. If not, you can make a free one so you’re guaranteed a comfortable ride.
Food & drink discount

No need to buy before you board. Our Let’s Eat Cafe is filled with delicious and locally sourced hot food, sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Plus, students get 10% off with an NUS card!
Quieter travel times

If you are able to travel more flexibly, we suggest travelling during the day or evenings on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. These days and times are generally quieter and tickets are often cheaper.
Download the LNER app

The LNER App makes it easy to buy eTickets and add them straight to your phone’s wallet. You’ll also get travel updates straight to your phone with LNER Assistant, so you’ll know if there are any changes to your journey including platform number.
