LNER Colleague Signs Off After Forty-Seven Years On The Railway
11/06/2026
After more than four incredible decades in the rail industry, Clive Casling from the LNER control room is retiring today, exactly forty-seven years to the day after starting his career.
Colleagues from across LNER, alongside members of Clive’s family, gathered to give him a surprise send-off and celebrate his many years of service.
For the past twenty years, Clive has been a familiar face in the East Coast Main Line control room. Based at the York Rail Operating Centre (ROC), the largest centre of its kind in the UK, Clive has worked with specialist colleagues to keep LNER trains running smoothly along one of the busiest routes. The LNER team works closely with colleagues from other train operators, including Northern and TransPennine Express, as well as Network Rail, helping millions of customers travel between London King’s Cross and the Scottish Borders every year.
During nearly five decades on the railway, Clive has seen huge changes across the industry and played an important role in many of them. Most recently, in December 2025, he was instrumental in overseeing the introduction of a new timetable, which delivered nearly 10,000 extra LNER services per year and more than 60,000 extra seats across the route every week. To support this major timetable change, Clive developed detailed contingency plans, drawing on his many years of experience, to help teams prepare for any challenges and keep customers on the move.
Speaking at the time, Clive said:
I know the impact that we can have on thousands of people every day. It’s a proud moment to leave the industry, having helped deliver this new timetable, as part of such a brilliant team.
Daniel Guilfoyle, Head of Service Delivery at LNER, said:
Clive Casling is someone who has always set the standard – in how he approaches the job, how he supports colleagues, and in the way he relentlessly focuses on doing the right thing for our customers.
It’s difficult to sum up a forty-seven-year career, but it’s fair to say Clive leaves a lasting legacy in Control and across the wider business. On behalf of all of us, thank you Clive – and all the very best for your retirement.
