What is happening to make tickets simpler?
What is happening to make tickets simpler?
We understand that rail travel can sometimes be confusing which is why we are committed to making tickets as simple as possible.
We have removed most return tickets as an option to buy for LNER managed journeys, you will be able to mix and match rail tickets to get the best value and flexibility for your journey.
As part of a Simpler Fares pilot, we've introduced a new Semi-Flexible ticket, a 70min Flex. This new ticket type lets you start your journey up to 70 minutes earlier or later than your originally booked journey. The 70min Flex may not always be shown alongside the Advance.
Please note, you will still see and be able to purchase return tickets available for other train operators, as well as a small number of LNER journeys.
Find out more on our Simpler Fares page.
What are the changes to ticket types?
What are the changes to ticket types?
When buying LNER tickets, you will no longer be able to purchase Return tickets for the majority of LNER journeys. Instead, you can choose from the following Single tickets in both Standard and First Class.
Fixed (Advance Single)
For travel on a specific train at a specific time
Off-Peak/Super Off-Peak Single
For travel on any less busy train outside of peak travel times (in First Class it is called an Off-Peak Single)
70min Flex
This new ticket type offers you the opportunity to Travel as booked, or start the journey up to 70 minutes earlier or later, travelling with LNER for the main leg of the journey. It is only available as part of the pilot on selected routes.
Fully Flexible (Anytime)

Please note, you will still see and be able to purchase Return tickets available for other train operators, as well as a small number of LNER journeys.
Why are the return tickets changing?
Why are the return tickets changing?
We know from your feedback that choosing rail tickets can be confusing. So, for us at LNER, it is important to make choosing rail tickets simpler for everyone.
With most return tickets on LNER journeys being removed, you need one single ticket for each leg of your journey. This means you can enjoy excellent value tickets in advance and flexible travel options for last-minute journeys.
Will I need to make a separate seat reservation?
Will I need to make a separate seat reservation?
Single tickets usually come with an automatic seat reservation but we advise to check in advance of travel. Flexible single tickets (Off-Peak and Anytime) can be changed for free up to five minutes before your scheduled departure from each station via our reservation tool online or by using the LNER App, if purchased online.
When using the 70min Flex, you can change your seat reservations in My account on the LNER app so you can enjoy your journey in comfort. If you're not able to get on the app, you can sign into your account on the LNER website and go to 'My account' to edit your seat reservation.
If you’re not online, you can board any valid train and find an available seat.
Can I buy a ticket for someone else?
Can I buy a ticket for someone else?
Yes. Train tickets can be used by anyone. If that person is collecting tickets from a ticket vending machine, they will need the credit or debit card used to make the booking. This might be a little tricky to work around so bear this in mind when booking. If it helps, you can request that tickets are posted to any UK postal address when you book online.
If you buy an eTicket, once you have loaded the ticket into your Apple or Google Wallet, you can share it with someone else. Alternatively, you can request a PDF to be emailed to you that can be printed.
You can also create Gift eVouchers for someone to purchase a train ticket.
Can I get an Off-Peak/Super Off-Peak Return ticket?
Can I get an Off-Peak/Super Off-Peak Return ticket?
Following our Simpler Fares trial, we've removed Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Returns from most LNER trains. These have been replaced with Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak Single tickets that are around half the price of a return ticket.
Find out more about our new, simpler fare structure on our Simpler Fares page.
