What to expect onboard
We want to give every LNER customer a great onboard experience with us, and these are just a handful of ways that we go about doing that on our Azuma trains.
Standard
Order food directly to your seat from our Cafe Bar, stick your phone on silent and tiptoe down to the quiet coach, or watch your favourite shows without worrying about running out of battery with a plug at every table. Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it in standard.
StandardFirst Class
With wider seats, USB and power sockets at every seat and, of course, complimentary food and drink served to you, First Class serves you the best travel experience at 125mph.
First Class

At LNER we believe that rail travel should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, which is why we have made Azuma as accessible as possible. As always, our Passenger Assist team are happy to assist you with planning your journey, and you can see the Azuma seating plans here with wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets clearly marked.

How many coaches are on an Azuma?
Depending on the train, destination, and time of journey, there will be between five, nine and 10 coaches.
Where can I put my luggage on an Azuma train?
Where can I put my luggage on an Azuma train?
One of the great benefits of these new trains is that the space under your seat and in the luggage racks above your head is much bigger. This means cabin-bag style cases, rucksacks and handbags can be kept close to you while onboard. Find out more about luggage onboard our trains here.

Yes! There’s no change to our pet policy onboard an Azuma train
What happens if my train has no Standard wheelchair spaces?
What happens if my train has no Standard wheelchair spaces?
If there are no Standard wheelchair spaces available on your selected train, our Assisted Travel team will upgrade you to First Class when a First Class wheelchair space is available.
On our 5 and 10 coach Azuma trains, there are no Standard wheelchair spaces, so our Assisted Travel team will reserve your space and/or seat in First Class for no extra charge. When trying to book a wheelchair space or companion seat on these types of trains, it will only offer you a Standard ticket. You do not need to buy a First Class ticket to book your wheelchair space and companion seat.
If you're unsure if your chosen train is a 5 or 10 coach Azuma, please contact our Assisted Travel team who will be happy to support you with this.
Are there priority seats on Azuma?
Are there priority seats on Azuma?
Yes. There are priority seats throughout our Azuma and Mark IV trains. These are usually located towards the end of a coach. You can see these on our Azuma seat map.
Azuma seat mapIf you have reduced mobility or are pregnant and require these priority seats, you can reserve them ahead of your journey by contacting Passenger Assist.

Yes, you will need a member of staff at the station to deploy the ramp for boarding and alighting the train if you need step-free access.
Our new Azuma trains have a ramp that is less steep and more comfortable for anyone going up or down them. Speak to a member of station staff or contact our Assisted Travel team to book assistance if you need step-free access on and off our trains.
Do the Azuma trains have announcements onboard?

Our Azuma trains have both audio and visual announcements on all trains to give you information about the stations the train is stopping at and for the safety information. This is a combination of automatic and manually triggered announcements. Pre-set announcements can be both triggered audibly and visually.
What do seat reservations look like onboard an Azuma train?

You can check your ticket (both outward and return) to see if you have a seat reservation. You can check your LNER account online or on the LNER Mobile App if you bought directly from us.
If you can see a coach and seat number, great - you already have a seat reservation!
If you don't have a seat number, getting one is easy. Simply use this form to make a free seat reservation.

Every window on our new trains, in both Standard and First Class, has a blind that can be pulled down.
There are a number of unreserved windowless seats at the end of the coaches, if you prefer to reduce bright light and glare on your journey.

Yes. All wheelchair spaces have a plug socket to charge your mobile devices and in First Class coaches there will also be USB ports.

There’s plenty of bike storage on our new trains. Bike storage is located in the following places depending on which type of Azuma train you board, don't worry your bike reservation will tell you which coach to go to.

9-coach Azuma: Four spaces in Coach K
10-coach Azuma: Two spaces in Coach K and two spaces in Coach D

Our Azuma trains were rolled out throughout 2019 across the East Coast mainline. Built using Japanese bullet train technology, they deliver smoother, quieter journeys and better value journeys.
This was part of the biggest revolution that the East Coast mainline has seen for more than thirty years.

Azuma trains can reach speeds of up to 125 miles an hour. Not only will your journey be more comfortable and smoother, it will be quicker. Yes, Azuma accelerates out of stations faster than any of our other trains. We love it and think you will too.

About our 10-coach Azuma train
You won't be able to walk from one end of the train to the other, this is because it is made up of two 5-coach trains.
Food and drink onboard: There's a Let's Eat Cafe Bar in coach B and G.
Wheelchair spaces: Accessible spaces can be found in coach E and M. Book assistance here.
Bike spaces: Bike spaces are in coach K and D, reserve a space here.
First Class: First Class coaches are in M, K & E, D.
Please make sure you board at the correct part of our Azuma 10-coach train.
