Bank Holiday Travel Advice

As the busy Bank Holiday weekend approaches, LNER is encouraging customers to plan ahead.

Various large-scale events are taking place across the LNER route and the wider rail network, which are expected to have an impact on travel times to and from stations. Customers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of time for their journey.

Fans will be travelling to the North East on Friday 22 August to watch England take on the USA in the opening match of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 at Sunderland's Stadium of Light. Customers are advised to consider busy local bus and Metro services, especially if travelling home by rail after the match.

With the Leeds Festival, Sky Bet Ebor Festival in York, further Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 fixtures, the Lost Village Festival in Lincolnshire and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe drawing to a close this weekend, LNER services and stations are expected to be busier than usual.

Planned industrial action affecting CrossCountry rail services between Saturday 23 and Monday 25 August, will mean a heavily reduced CrossCountry timetable over the Bank Holiday weekend. While LNER services are not affected by this industrial action, trains are likely to be busier.

Significant engineering work for the next stage of the East Coast Digital Programme will also take place between Peterborough and London King’s Cross on Sunday 24 August 2025. LNER trains will start and terminate at Peterborough. Rail replacement coaches will operate between Peterborough and Bedford, where customers can connect to rail services to and from London St Pancras.

Engineering work is also taking place on the West Coast Main Line over the Bank Holiday, affecting services to and from London Euston. Alternative routes to other London stations are expected to be busy because of these planned works.
