Rail replacement services
When your train service can’t run as scheduled, we will provide alternative transport to connect some of our route. Journey planners will show if any part of your journey includes a rail replacement service, but they may leave at different times to train times so always check before you travel.
Unfortunately, we cannot always provide the same facilities on a rail replacement service, for example onboard catering.
When using rail replacement coaches:
You should hold a valid train ticket before boarding.
Bikes (except ones that fold) or dogs (except Guide Dogs) cannot be accommodated.
Please fold pushchairs and prams before boarding.
You are not allowed to drink alcohol on rail replacement coaches.
All services will display the destination, train company name and RAIL REPLACEMENT wording.
Railway staff will be available to assist customers at stations that are usually staffed.
Coaches for longer journeys usually include a toilet but not always. If possible, use the station facilities before you depart.
A different timetable operates when rail replacement services are in use, and journeys may take longer than usual. However, if the replacement services are significantly delayed against that temporary change to the normal timetable, you can still claim Delay Repay compensation.
Accessibility
LNER will always use rail replacement vehicles, such as buses and coaches, that are compliant with relevant government requirements. This includes compliance with accessibility requirements of the Public Sector Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (PSVAR) or operation under a special authorisation certificate granted by the Government.
If, for any reason, we are unable to provide compliant vehicles during periods of planned disruptions, for example engineering works, we will let any impacted customer know in advance. An alert on the service will be available via National Rail Enquiries.
During unplanned disruption we always try use accessible rail replacement vehicles and will only other vehicles (which still comply with government requirements) when no more accessible vehicles are available to us. In situations where accessible vehicles are unavailable or limited, we will provide alternative accessible transport (such as taxis) for customers who need them.
