70min Flex (Semi-flexible) tickets

A new ticket type that makes travelling by train a little simpler.

As part of a Simpler Fares pilot, we've introduced a new Semi-Flexible ticket, a 70min Flex ticket. This new ticket type lets you start your journey up to 70 minutes earlier or later than originally booked.

Travel with the new 70min Flex is restricted to the below routes:

  • Between London and Newcastle

  • Between London and Berwick

  • Between London and Edinburgh

Since Autumn 2024, we've expanded the pilot to more local stations surrounding Edinburgh, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle for journeys to and from London, and extended the availability of the 70min Flex ticket to include other train operators in these areas. This includes Northern, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry, ScotRail and Newcastle Metro services.

On these routes, Off-Peak and Super Off-Peak tickets will no longer be available, but you'll still be able to access cheap tickets with Advance tickets and get simple flexibility with 70min Flex tickets.

Like Fixed Advance tickets, you also get a guaranteed seat on your booked train with a 70min Flex ticket. If your plans change, it’s easy to swap your ticket on ‘My Account’ on the LNER website or the LNER App. You’ll be shown all other valid trains and can swap at the click of a button. If you’re not online, board any valid train and find an available seat.

You'll be able to flex your ticket between London and 27 stations for journeys taking place after Monday 30 September. For the full list, view our route map.

What are the advantages?

  • If you think your meeting might over run or if you're wanting to get home a little earlier for dinner, you can flex your ticket

  • Cheaper than an Anytime (Fully Flexible) ticket
