Retford Station Team Raise £5k For Charity In Memory Of Colleague

The LNER station team at Retford have raised £5,000 for charity after completing a sponsored walk in memory of a former colleague who died from cancer.
Kevin White joined the team at Retford in October 2001, working to support customers as they travelled by train. During his time at the station, he developed lifelong friendships with his colleagues. Kevin also worked at Newark Northgate station for more than ten years during his time on the East Coast Main Line.
Kevin sadly passed away earlier this year. During his illness, Kevin and his family received ‘tremendous help’ from Macmillan Cancer Support, and the station team challenged themselves to give something back.
More than 20 people, including LNER station colleagues at Retford and other stations, and friends and family of Kevin, walked the near-20-mile journey from Doncaster station to their home base at Retford.
So far this year, through various events, they have raised £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support thanks to generous donations from colleagues and friends.
Melvyn Caddick, Station Customer Service Assistant at LNER, said: “Kevin was a dear friend of us all at Retford station, and we are still coming to terms with the devastating loss that we have encountered. When he was ill, he received great care from the Macmillan team and we wanted to do something, in his memory, to give back.
“Kevin was a railway man, and we thought it only fitting to walk between two LNER stations, starting in Doncaster, and finishing at Retford, Kevin’s workplace for nearly a quarter of a century. It has been great to raise so much money and we’re grateful to everyone who has donated.
Kevin White’s family said: “Kevin would do anything for us, no matter what it entailed. He would be there for us whenever we needed him and supported us throughout.
“He loved his job, contributing a lot of his time to LNER, which was a huge part of his and our lives. As a family, we are incredibly grateful for all the support we have received throughout the last few months. Kevin is missed by us all, but he is always in our thoughts. We hope we made him proud by completing the sponsored walk, and that we continue to make him proud.”
