LNER Teams Up With The King's Trust To Help Put Careers On Track
04/07/2025

LNER has teamed up with The King’s Trust (formerly The Prince’s Trust) to support young adults in exploring career opportunities on the railway.
The charity was founded in the 1970s by His Majesty King Charles III, then Prince of Wales, to help 11- to 30-year-olds to gain valuable life skills and employment.
LNER has partnered with the organisation to provide a month-long work placement for six young adults at Newcastle Central Station, their first formal work experience within the rail industry. They have been able to work alongside the station team to learn more about a variety of roles, from supporting customers on the platforms, the First Class lounge, and at the concourse gate lines.
Today, Friday 4 July 2025, marks the end of their placement. A special event took place to celebrate their achievements. LNER has been so impressed by the participants that some will now be offered jobs at Newcastle station.
Jake Orros, Community Partnership Manager at LNER said: “We are committed to serving the vibrant communities along our stunning route. Working with charities like The King’s Trust in Newcastle enables us to have a real impact where it matters most. It has been brilliant working alongside the charity to support young adults to boost their employability skills and help them find their first jobs on the railway.”
Caroline Mason, LNER Station Delivery Manager at Newcastle reflected: “It has been a real joy to see the young people grow in confidence and experience over the past 4 weeks. They have worn their LNER uniforms with immense pride. Our station team has been impressed by their positive attitude and willingness to learn. We’re delighted that some of the team will be joining us full-time as Station Support Assistants after the summer.”
Ryan Mckeown, Youth Development Lead at the King’s Trust, who has been on hand to support the young adults throughout said: “I have loved working with the participants, who have grown and flourished during their placement Our partnerships with businesses like LNER help offer young adults opportunities, new skills and experiences as they set out on their career path.”
Abigael Wafula, one of the participants shared her experience: “LNER isn’t just a company, it's one big family, I’ve loved every minute of the programme. The skills we’ve learnt over the past month can be used in life.”
