The findings highlight cities across the country that offer the perfect mix of haunted history, ghostly tales, and family-friendly Halloween activities. As more families seek destinations with a blend of fun and spooky experiences, LNER’s research has been designed to help them discover some of the best places for a thrilling autumn getaway.
The research, commissioned by LNER, gathered data on three key factors: ghost sightings, the number of haunted hotels, and the average annual searches for Halloween-related terms. The top 90 most populated cities in the UK were considered, with a Spooky Score assigned to each based on these criteria, adjusted for population size.
Claiming the top spot as the UK’s spookiest city is Exeter, with its fascinating history and haunted landmarks. Known for its eerie atmosphere, Exeter offers a variety of Halloween events and ghost tours perfect for families. Visitors can explore its historic streets while uncovering chilling tales of the city’s haunted past.
In second place is York, a city renowned for its medieval streets and ghost tours. Scoring 70 on the Spooky Score, York is a must-visit for those seeking a spooky experience. Families can stroll through the Shambles, enjoy guided ghost walks, and visit the famously haunted Golden Fleece pub. York’s rich history makes it a prime destination for Halloween fun.
Other destinations among the LNER routes, such as Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Peterborough, and Lincoln, also feature in the Top 10. Newcastle ranks eighth with its ghost tours and friendly local legends, while Peterborough, in ninth position, offers eerie cathedral events and playful ghost stories. Lincoln, rounding out the list at tenth, provides a mix of history and Halloween fun with its medieval castle and festive activities.
