Bratwurst & Beer: How To Go German Ahead Of Euro 2024

You don’t need to travel to Euro 2024 to enjoy classic food and drink from the host nation, according to new research by train operator LNER.

They’ve named the top three places in both England and Scotland to enjoy German classics like bratwurst and sauerkraut alongside Bavarian beers.

Scotland kick off their Euro 2024 campaign on Friday in the opening game of the tournament, taking on the home team in Munich, while England play Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday.

LNER Customer Experience Director Claire Ansley said: “We know our customers love food from around the world, and so we wanted to find out where they could travel to in England and Scotland if they wanted to enjoy German food and drink. As the rail operator running between London and Scotland we’re wishing both home nations the best of luck at Euro 2024”.

Here are LNER’s top three recommendations for enjoying German hospitality in Scotland.

Brewhemia, Edinburgh

Situated right next to Edinburgh Waverley Station, this bar with a large restaurant area serves authentic bratwurst, currywurst and veganwurst.

Bavaria Brauhaus, Glasgow

This Munich-style Bavarian beer hall serves German beer alongside bier battered bratwurst and veganwurst as well as German classics such as sauerkraut and strudel.

Manuelas Wee Bakery, Ardelve

Situated in a fairy tale style crooked cottage, this bakery and cafe is run by a husband and wife team who moved to Scotland from Germany. It’s famous for its quirky look as well as its wonderful German breads and pastries.

The Top 3 German recommendations in England are:

German Gymnasium, King’s Cross

Käserspätzle, schnitzel and würste are all on the menu at what was once voted “The Most Beautiful Restaurant in the World”.

Stein Bier Keller, Newcastle

An underground bar opened by two German brothers selling numerous different German beers.

Klubhouse by Bierkeller, Grantham

Recently opened in the Lincolnshire town this bar also sells bratwurst, vegan bratwurst, pretzels and meatloaf.
