The Stadium of Light is home to Sunderland A.F.C. in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. It opened in 1997 with an initial capacity of 42,000 which later expanded to 49,000 seats. The name Stadium of Light pays tribute to the city’s coal mining heritage symbolising the miner’s lamp as a beacon of hope.

How do I get to The Stadium of Light?
The nearest station to the Stadium of Light is Sunderland Station which is only a short walk, bus or train ride away from the stadium. The nearest major train station is Newcastle which can easily be reached on an LNER train across the country including from London, Edinburgh, York, and Stevenage.
If you are travelling by car, The Stadium of Light is just off the A19 and A1(M) with a free park-and-ride available on matchdays. On non-matchdays, there are several nearby car parks to choose from.
How to Get from Sunderland Station to The Stadium of Light?
From Sunderland Station, The Stadium of Light is an 18-minute walk. Alternatively, you can get the Green Metro line to St Peter's and walk 8 minutes or get the 13, 3, 9 or 24 bus from Fawcett Street just outside the station to Wheatsheaf and then a 5-minute walk to the stadium.
How to Get from Newcastle Station to The Stadium of Light?
Newcastle Station is more easily accessible than Sunderland Station and can be reached on several LNER routes. Once you have reached Newcastle Station the easiest way to The Stadium of Light is to get the Green Metro line all the way to St Peter's stop which takes 35 minutes and then an 8-minute walk to the stadium.
Other options from Newcastle to Sunderland include the Northern Railway which takes you to Sunderland Station where you can then go onward to the stadium. Or you can drive which takes around 30 minutes but traffic can get busy on matchdays and you will need to consider where you will park.
