It's almost time to say goodbye to your halls and roommates and get back to your family this Christmas.

To make sure you can get your ticket, travel safely and save some money, follow our student guide to festive travel.

Things are a little different

We know you're eager to get back to some homecooked meals, maybe even some Christmas baking and to see friends and family you've not seen since September.

However, things might have changed since you last travelled with us. So, before you buy your ticket or set off for the station this Christmas, it's important for you to take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with some of the changes.

Christmas travel tips

To help keep you and everyone safe whilst you travel, please follow our Christmas travel tips below.

P.s. Remember to give yourself plenty of time when you arrive at the station to get to your platform, especially if you're bringing luggage.

Plan ahead for Christmas engineering work

Over Christmas, there are some planned engineering across our route. When you're planning your travel home and back to university please, bear this in mind and check before you travel.

Thursday 24 December (Christmas Eve) – Avoid Travel to or from London

Services will be very busy with reduced capacity into and out of London King’s Cross Station.

Friday 25 and Saturday 26 December (Christmas Day and Boxing Day) – No trains run on these days

LNER will operate no trains or alternative services on either of these dates.

Sunday 27 through to Wednesday 30 December – Do Not Travel to or from London

Four day period of significant disruption with no services to or from London King’s Cross Stationor between St Pancras and Finsbury Park.

  • If you’re making an essential journey during this time, you will need to transfer at Peterborough for alternative services to or from London
  • Alternative routes will likely be very busy and should also be avoided
  • You must have a seat reservation to travel on LNER trains
  • If you do need to travel you can create a Ticket Alert for these dates.

Thursday 31 December through to Sunday 3 January 2021 – Avoid Travel to or from London

Services will be very busy with reduced capacity into and out of London King’s Cross Station.
