Say Goodbye to the Inter-City 125
Join the retirement party for High Speed Trains
In December 2019 we said a fond farewell to the Inter-City 125 High Speed Train (HST). These loyal work horses of the railway system served East Coast commuters and communities for over 30 years but have now started a well-deserved retirement. In their place will be our brand new Azuma Trains offering more seats, extra routes and modern interiors.
Before they left the platform for the last time, we held the chance to bid a proper farewell to the much loved HST. We ran a number of special charter services along the East Coast Mainline and dressed the Inter-City 125 up in their original 'birthday suits' (British Rail colours). All the money raised from the tour and sales of our official merchandise went to our charity partner CALM and The Samaritans along the way.
The Final Tour Dates
The HST's final journey on the East Coast Mainline was a mammoth four-day tour starting in Edinburgh and ending in London Kings Cross
- 18 December - Edinburgh to Aberdeen
- 19 December - Inverness to Newcastle
- 20 December - Newcastle to York and then Leeds
- 21 December - stopping at all stations from Leeds to London King's Cross
Meet the Next Generation
It's sad to see the HST go, but in its place is the amazing Azuma. Our new fleet of diesel-electric hybrid trains has already started to operate and will cover the entire East Coast route. Azuma uses technology from the Japanese bullet train, helping to make your journeys faster and quieter. Inside you'll find a while host of improvements including:
- Free, reliable WiFi
- Power sockets at every seat
- Window blinds in all carriages
- Seat reservation displays
- 7cm of extra legroom
- Extra accessible toilets
- A smoother journey
The Azuma is also 90% more environmentally friendly than old trains.
45 HSTs will be replaced by 65 Azuma trains, meaning more routes, more options and more seats. We think you're going to enjoy your journeys.
