More about Newcastle

Greasy spoon cafe

The Cafe

Full English or bacon sandwich? A great place for a hangover cure or just a brilliant start to the day. The fry-up is hard to beat – bacon, sausage and all the rest, with a cheeky hash brown on the side.
This family-run traditional café has friendly staff, is in a great location and won't break the bank either. Pass the ketchup.

Light lunch

La Petite Creperie

Crepes and buckwheat galettes are made before your eyes on a sizzling hot plate at this mobile gem run by French folk, which pops up all over the city. Light, crispy and delicious, go for the Emmental with ham and mushroom. And round it off with the salted butter caramel or Nutella for a not-so-light lunch.

Cheap eats

 Fat Hippo Jesmond

These burgers are so loaded with tasty stuff we're not sure you'll get your mouth around one without forgoing your table manners. Maybe that's where the name came from? As they so eloquently put it – 'good food, messy fingers, juicy burgers – Fat Hippo do the good kind of gluttony'. Burgers are super-good and gluten-free too.

Rustic romantic

Blackfriars

Set in a former friary, Blackfriars has a really intimate feel, with upper and lower sections each seating just 36 people. Get a bit giddy with champagne or prosecco by the glass and finish with the passionfruit cheesecake and passionfruit sorbet to ramp up the romance.

Trendy hipster

dAt bAr

These days craft beer is much more about trendy hipsters than middle-aged real ale fans wanting a pint and a pie. Here you are more likely to get a goat's cheese salad, sourdough pizza or a slider. Try the burger made from beef dry aged in Europe's only Himalayan salt chamber, giving it amazing flavours and textures.

Pink Lane Coffee

You know it's a place that takes coffee seriously when they tell what brand of espresso machine they use. (It's a La Marzocco GB5 MP, if you really want to know). Beans come from coffee roasters such as Extract, Origin and Round Hill. Great for vegans as they have soy and almond milk too. Salads, wraps and quesadilla often feature on the menu. There's also brownies, flapjacks and tempting handmade truffles.

Hotel Indigo

It's one of Marco Pierre White's restaurants so you know you are in safe hands with afternoon tea here. Delicate finger sandwiches, pastries, cakes and scones with clotted cream and jam served with tea from Ringtons or coffee make this a classic afternoon tea.
