9 extraordinary York shops for a shopping trip to remember
York is packed with all manner of charming shops – from antique jewellery and pick-and-mix spices to a proper Victorian perfumery. See what else is on the list...
Go label-tastic at the Designer Outlet
This isn’t a shop, more a shopping centre. But its vast array of designer clobber at cut prices means it’s more than worthy of a mention. From Hackett to Hobbs, and Paul Smith to Polo Ralph Lauren, it’s a great place to splash some cash. Just hop on a bus from York city centre…

Try on some tweed at Bowler Vintage
Bowler is one of the most dapper vintage shops going. More Great Gatsby than rock and roll, its shelves and rails display (incredibly neatly) tweed jackets, mohair waistcoats, polka-dot dresses and swing skirts. The shop is delightful too – like stepping back in time to the days of bright young things and raffish bounders. Great fun.

Delight cat people at the Cat Gallery
Everyone knows a cat person – and if they’ve sneered at your previous efforts at gifts, then prepare to be redeemed. The Cat Gallery is a smorgasbord of cat-themed paraphernalia. Cat purses, cat pens, cat jigsaws and cat notepads. And that’s just for the cat owners. For the cats? Beds, carriers, scratch-posts, catnip, cat combs and a whole lot more.

Find a rock worthy of ‘I do’ at the Antiques Centre
Asking someone to marry you shouldn’t be about the quality of the ring, but we all know it so is. Find a ring that’s not only sparkly but also has a back story of its own. This is a proper antiques shop – all fusty smells, towering glass cabinets and wondrous artefacts adorning the walls. And the vintage jewellery is truly beautiful. Truly a girl’s best friend.

Cook up lip-smacking curries from Rafi’s Spicebox
Who doesn’t love a good Ruby? Now you can create your own authentic curries with a trip to Rafi’s Spice Box. Choose your curry mix, take it home, put it in a pan with coconut milk, tomatoes or stock, add your chicken or prawns (or whatever), and away you go.
The spice mixes are plentiful – choose from a classic rogan josh or tikka masala, or push the boat out with a saag gosht or a slow-cooker phaal.

Browse the beers at Trembling Madness
In the bowels of one of York’s most famous pubs lies a shop selling a basically brilliant range of bottled beers. The House of Trembling Madness is a medieval drinking hall, dating back to the 1100s. It sells craft beer, premium lager and real ale. Its standards are high. Find the same sentiment in the shop downstairs, where the walls are lined with beer-packed shelves from the world over. There are worse places to lose an hour.
