Need inspiration? What to see

Take a walking tour of the old town and retrace the footsteps of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and Mary Queen of Scots. This is a great way to explore the city and learn about its fascinating history. Kids will love the stories while history buffs will enjoy reliving Stirling’s most famous moments.

Stirling Castle is a must-see for visitors, especially if you’re travelling with kids. Explore the Great Hall and the kitchens where pies and puddings were cooked up to be devoured at medieval banquets, dances and feasts. Down in the vaults you’ll find interactive exhibits on the crafts, music and jokes that have been popular in the castle over the centuries.

Another family favourite is the towering Old Town Jail. Explore the history of Scottish crime and punishment through thrilling and hilarious live performance tours. Find out about the jail’s most infamous inmates (and executioners), or simply enjoy the view of the city and the Trossachs beyond from the observation tower.

Hidden Stirling

Back in the present, Stirling has plenty of 21st-century entertainment to enjoy. Allanwater Brewhouse is a beer-lover’s heaven with an impressive selection of ales on tap and its own micro-brewery. If you prefer something a little stronger, Deanston Distillery offers guided distillery tours and whisky tastings.

Families will love the Stirling Highland Games. Held every year on the third weekend of August, the games are a traditional celebration of Scottish culture and community. Meanwhile, outdoorsy folk will find themselves right on the doorstep of the hills and trails of Loch Lomond.
